3 Calls. 3 Interviews. 1 Week!

3 Calls. 3 Interviews. 1 Week3 Calls. 3 Interviews. 1 Week? Singing a la The Brady Bunch Heres the storyof a smart jobseeker His name is Shean. His professional background was sales in the transportation services sector. But he was looking for a career change ideally, into the medical device arena, where he could leise apply his sales skills. In order to make his transition sooner rather than later, Shean took advantage of a few key job search strategies. Heres precisely what he did to get 3 calls for 3 interviews in 1 week.1) Avoid the KILLER mistake that will automatically make the recruiter ignore you. You know what recruiters dont care about what you do. You know what they do care about? How well you do what you do. Theres a tremendous difference between presenting the job, and presenting your performance in the job.Shean came to the table with advanced sales skills and specific metrics to prove his value. We showcased those directly on his resume and LinkedIn profile. (Theres n o longer any such concept as saving your best material for the interview.)2) Bypass HR and have the right recruiters reach out to you. Its important to understand 2 things you must be on LinkedIn to make any serious progress in your job search. And you must use LinkedIn as a platform not to search all day, but for you to be searched for.Shean spoke the recruiters language, accenting his profile with the search terms recruiters would likely use to find someone like him. By the way, those search terms are not things like aggressive, or dynamic. We expertly weaved in key words highly-specific to the industry he wanted to be in.3) Break into the hidden job market, even if you only know 1-2 headhunters. Job search is more about who you know than what you know. But when you feel you dont know anybody, there are some very specific steps to take to change that.Shean didnt just build the profile and hope recruiters would magically come to it. He promoted his profile. That means seeking out t he relevant recruiters in his targeted industry, connecting with them, and engaging in conversation to show his thought leadership. Results Shean successfully made the career transition he wanted. Heres Sheans recommendation on LinkedIn, the same week his professional services were completed Since my resume and Linkedin profile were redone I have received calls from 3 executive recruiters and have already done a phone interview for a medical device position. The exact same (and more) can happen for you in your job search. Sheans story is just parte of the picture. See other success stories and hear the full details about the complete system that got multiple jobseekers calls for interviews fast in our free webinar, How To Get 3 Calls For 3 Interviews In 1 Week bit.ly/3calls1week

How honest should you be in your exit interview

How honest should you be in your exit interviewHow honest should you be in your exit interviewIve worked at universities, research labs, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle. In most cases, when I left my job I welches given an exit interview. In some cases I left because of frustration with the job, organization, or leadership. In others I was bored and couldnt find a good challenge where I was. In still others I was moving for personal reasons, such as getting married and needing to relocate. When youre frustrated, its natural to try and settle scores or give heart-felt advice on how the company should change at the exit interview. You should absolutelynotgive in to this desire.Negative feedback generally changes nothing. The exception is if theres a trend theyve already noticed, it can confirm that trend, such as leaving from under-pay. Even in these cases you are painted in a negative light for abandoning ship rather than helping fix the problem. The world is small. If youre working in tech and move around, youll likely bump into the same people over and over again. On several occasions Ive left in frustration at a particular leader, only to wind up working for or with them again years later. Sometimes at the same company, sometimes at other companies, or even across the world. Theres no upside to giving negative feedback that might find its way back to them it changes nothing except their opinion of you, and the opinions of those who listen to them.Nobody likes a complainer.Full stop. Who do you respect more when youre stuck in a job, someone who complains all the time and drags everyone down, or someone who rolls up their shirt sleeves and tries to do the best they can?The bottom lineExit interviews are mostly a formality, a reminder of policies, and (in some cases) a threat of legal action if you dont take policies and agreements seriously, especially for recruiting.Dont mistake the exit interview for anything more personally meaningful than that, because 9 9 times out of 100 its not. You accomplish nothing by giving honest reasons for leaving or negative feedback, and it can hurt your future. This article first appeared at Quora.

February 2019 Jobs Report

February 2019 Jobs ReportFebruary 2019 Jobs ReportWhile the U.S. economy saw its 101st month of consecutive job growth in February, payroll expansion was well below analysts expectations. Employers added 20,000 jobs last month, according to the February jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That is the lowest number since September 2017.Job gains in January were 7,000 mora than previously reported, according to the BLS. Since the departure of 2019, employers have added 331,000 jobs to the U.S. economy.Employers in professional and business services led job growth in February, adding 42,000 jobs, including 5,800 jobs in temporary help services.Unemployment declines to 3.8 percentThe national unemployment rate dropped to 3.8 percent in February, from 4.0 percent in January. The unemployment rate for college-degreed workers who are 25 or older - the professionals most in demand by employers - fell to 2.2 percent. What employers need to knowAt the end of 2018, 7.3 millio n jobs were waiting to be filled, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) report from the BLS. So, the demand for skilled talent persists, and employers need to be prepared to negotiate salary with potential hires. In this competitive market, many job candidates feel empowered to ask for more money. In fact, more than half (55 percent) of professionals responding to a recent survey said they had tried to negotiate a higher salary with the last employment offer. Thats a 16-point jump from a similar survey released in early 2018.If youve already researched local trends to calculate the salary for the ort, what else can you do to ensure compensation discussions are constructive for you and the candidate? Here are two quick tipsBe transparent from the get-go. Be proactive about discussing salary with candidates early in the hiring process. The money discussion is unavoidable, so why put it off? Transparency gives candidates the opportunity to walk away if they feel the pay wont meet their needs. And it allows you to focus on the applicants who do find the salary acceptable.Highlight perks and benefits. Salary is only one part of a compensation package - and not necessarily a dealmaker or -breaker for all candidates. So, underscore other high-value offerings, such as paid vacation time, professional development opportunities or telecommuting programs. And dont forget benefits like health insurance and retirement savings plans, which many workers covet. If you come across a candidate you believe would be an ideal fit for the job and your organization, be willing to flex on salary to the extent possible. What job seekers need to knowHow prepared are you to talk salary with an employer once you receive an employment offer? Research from shows that 70 percent of hiring managers dont expect candidates to accept the initial salary they propose. So, you can be sure that they know they need to be ready to negotiate. To lay the groundwork for a productive dis cussion, research current and relevant salary data first. Consult resources like Robert Halfs annual Salary Guides to determine the going rate for the position youre targeting and your experience level. Robert Halfs Salary Calculator can help you drill down on specific figures for your geographic area.Once youre in a salary negotiation, apply these two strategies for successBe specific with numbers. If youve done your homework, you should be able to tell an employer what starting pay you believe you deserve. You can provide an exact number, or a range that is somewhat narrow - for example, $60,000-$68,000. Also, know what your baseline salary is going in - that is, the bottom-line figure you would accept before walking away.Explain why youre a good investment. If youre asking an employer to flex on compensation, help them see why they should consider your request. What return can they expect by agreeing to a higher starting salary than they may have budgeted for the position? Shar e examples of how you believe your skills and experience would enhance the business. Its important to be forthright about the level of compensation that you seek. The employer needs to understand what your expectations are - and you need to negotiate a salary that will meet your needs. Just be careful not to focus so much on salary that you overlook the value of the full compensation package thats on the table. You may find that the benefits and perks the employer is offering may mean more to you than a bigger paycheck.

How Get an Agent as an Actor, Writer, or Director

How Get an werber as an Actor, Writer, or DirectorHow Get an Agent as an Actor, Writer, or DirectorGetting an agent can seem like an impossible task, but its bedrngnis as difficult as you might think. Agents are an important part of your befhigung success in the creative realm, but they arent the end all be all. That said, how do you go about getting one? Depending on whether you are an actor, writer or director, the process of getting an agent is a bit different for each vocation. But no matter what you wish to be, the trick to getting an agent, however, is that you usually need to make most of the effort. Talent Agents for Actors For actors, the type of agent you need is called a talent agent. That might seem obvious, but there are a number of different types of talent agents depending on what type of work youre looking for. You want to start by finding someone who specializes in the area that youre hoping to break into. A talent agent that specializes in the film is very diffe rent from the one who specializes in commercials. So, begin by determining which direction is best suited to you. Talent agents usually find their clients in one of three ways 1) they are referrals from other people 2) they are people they sought out (most often established actors that were stolen from other agencies) or 3) by discovering them through a talent showcase, student film or other completed work. Does this mean that you wont ever be discovered by working as a waitress at a Hollywood industry hangout? No, but your chances are markedly decreased if this is the only effort you make. Too many actors think that an agent will choose to represent them, simply because they have an amazing headshot. True, a good headshot might give you the slightest edge toward getting a meeting, but more often than not, it ends up in the trash. One quick note about headshots you want to be aya that no matter what, you look as close to your headshot as possible. If youve gained or lost weight, cha nged your hairstyle, or simply aged a few years, nothing will turn off a casting agent faster than an inaccurate photo representation of you. Pay the extra money and update them as you need to. The trick to getting a good talent agent is to be sure that you put yourself in a place to get discovered. That means, find work on your own. That could mean anything from doing talent showcases to student films to whatever else you can find. If you live in Los Angeles or New York, and even if you dont, you should subscribe to Back Stage West (either the magazine or the website), as this is an excellent resource for aspiring actors to find student and low-budget movies that are casting and are more likely to consider green actors. Also, consider checking out Craigslist.com. Its surprising how many low budget films advertise there looking for casting potentials. Be careful choosing this route, however, as a lot of seemingly legitimate ads may not be legitimate. Be aware of anyone who wants to charge you money for their representation services. Agents rep their clients for free and only get paid when they get their clients work. Stay as far away from these types as you can. Literary Agent for Writers With writing, again its very important that you first determine what type of writing you wish to do. Are you planning on becoming a feature writer (movies), television writer, or a novelist? (If you are in fact planning on becoming a novelist, know that much of what follows will not apply to you. This section will focus on film and TV writers.) Once youve decided what type of writing you wish to specialize in, now you can start the process of getting an agent. The first thing you need to have is some sort of written materie. After all, you cant really call yourself a writer if you dont have a body of work that represents what youre capable of. So, be sure to have either a spec script (or two) if you wish to be a TV writer or a feature spec if you wish to write for film. O nce you have these materials in hand, you cant just blindly submit them to agencies and then hope that theyll read your script. This is when your networking skills become key. You will want to be sure to let all of your friends and co-workers know that you hope to break into Hollywood as a writer and that youre in the market for an agent. Chances are someone will know someone who will know someone who will know someone that can get your material in front of an agent. Literary agents are, for the most part, pretty intelligent people who are always looking for good material written by good writers. After all, they all want to take credit for finding the next David E. Kelly or Aaron Sorkin- and whos to say thats not you? If they read your stuff and like it, chances are theyll seek you out. The hard part is getting your material in front of these people. So, that means you have to network, network, network, and network some more. One thing you need to be aware of however is that you wil l likely just have one chance to make an impression on an agent. They are very busy people who arent likely to give writers a couple of chances to impress them. So, only submit your material when its at its very best. That means everything from making sure your dialogue, story structure, and characters are top notch, to making sure you have proofread your script for typos. Dont spend a lot of time on your cover. Your material should look like a script. Plain, white, three-hole paper bound with brass script brands. Dont bind it, put a fancy cover on it, and never put any other information on it other than the title, author, and your contact information. Anything else and people reading it will know youre an amateur. Agents for Directors For potentialdirectors, getting an agent is actually not all that difficult (if youre talented). If youre a legitimate director, meaning youve actually directed something that you can send out as material, many agents will be willing to add you to their roster to see whether or not your work sparks with the executives they deal with. Agents that represent directors learn the type of genre and tone that their existing directors are capable of directing and will usually seek out those projects that suit those needs. So, the trick here is to become a part of that list. You need to start this process by first compiling aDirectors Reel. Your reel should have snippets of everything youve directed to date so that anyone watching it will see that you have the following qualifications Talent Talent with regard to directing means you need to showcase your abilities to find certain types of shots, get the most out of your actors and the ability to put your own visual spin (or voice) on whatever the subject matter might be.Technical Skills You need to show that you can get the shot coverage you need to effectively tell a story as well as the ability to direct the editing process to achieve complete and well-rounded scenes.Proper Tone If youre putting yourself out there as a comedy director, but you cant visually relate a scripted joke, then you might not be well suited for your job of choice. Your reel needs to showcase both the type of work youre capable of as well as the voice you use to show it. One important thing to remember when making your directors reel is to be sure that you dont overload it. Simply add those pieces of material that best showcase your directing talents and keep the entire reel under 5 minutes if possible. If you wish to include full episodes or movies, be sure to do so after your initial five-minute sample. Anything longer and chancesaregood there will be few if any executives and producers who will watch the entire thing and not get to the parts you want them to see. Keep in mind that getting an agent is not the impossible task it can often seem to be. You need to have extreme patience during this process, but that doesnt mean that you sit around waiting for an agent to suddenly discove r you and your talents. Get out there and show off what you do and let the agents come and find you.

7 Must-Have Skills for a B2B Tech Services Firm Marketing Team

7 Must-Have Skills for a B2B Tech Services Firm Marketing Team When it comes to effectively absatzwirtschaft professional services, many technology services firms find the process of building a strategy significantly easierthan deploying that strategy. That is because even the simplest, most straightforward marketing strategy requires a wide range of skills to execute. So, what are the requisite skills for marketing a tech services firm effectively? What skills should you be looking to add to your team?1. Research SkillsThere are two important research methods to consider. Keyword research the basis of any content-based marketing program demands knowledge of the tools to conduct keyword research and a strong understanding of the firms clients and their challenges. Target audience research demands comfort in conducting executive-level interviews with clients. A researcher who clearly understands the firms services will be able to develop the data gath ered through interviews into strong content.2. Strategy SkillsTarget audience research can be used to inform a marketing strategy with information about the differentiators that set a firm apart from competitors. As a result, an effective strategist should be capable of applying this research to develop positioning and create messages targeted to each audience. A strategist should also be able to see the big picture of how a firm is positioned and understand how to weave that story into subsequent marketing copy on brand assets such as websites, collateral, and even supporting themes for thought leadership.3. Writing SkillsThere are two writing styles necessary to deliver amessage across the broadest range of audiences. Marketing copy must be brief and persuasive to convince prospective clients that a service is the best choice. This might include promotional emails, website copy, and proposals.Editorial copy is designed to provide a taste of the insight that a firm can provide. Thi s content, including blogs, white papers, and webinars, will demonstrate expertise in a non-promotional way. It establishes a firm as a thought leader, prompting prospects to seek out expert services.4. Promotional SkillsA strong content base is useless if no one is reading it. Promotion is most effective when performed by a partie who enjoys working and communicating with other people. This person will need to share content with a broad audience through avenues such as social media, trade shows, and networking events. Further, this person will need to network with editors of other publications to secure guest author opportunities. Both technical knowledge and interpersonal skills are necessary for this marketing task.5. Analytics SkillsAll marketing strategies must be regularly tested for effectiveness. Long-term success depends on tracking, monitoring, testing, and reporting on every piece of the strategy. Where are leads coming from? What do conversions look like? What trends are you seeing in web traffic? This activity requires specialized knowledge to determine which metrics to track in the first place, how to interpret the data, and how to report that information to the rest of the team to inform future strategies.6. Design SkillsGood graphic design can play a strong role in drawing in an audience. It also can create a first impression of your firm. A designer should bedrngnis only understand the principles around user experience for digital design, but also the B2B buyer mindset the B2B buyer will respond to a different set of criteria than a B2C buyer will.7. Implementation SupportIts important to keep marketing momentum moving forward. The implementation support team has responsibility for managing the editorial calendar, posting regular updates to the website or blog, and handling other details that keep the marketing plan running. This highly organized team may also be in charge of marketing automation and/or contact management.Finding the Right co cktail of Skills for MarketingAs you consider how to recruit for the right skill sets, keep in mind the range of talents and knowledge needed to deploy a successful marketing strategy. While some of these skills may be found in a single person, others demand very different ways of thinking and will likely require multiple people. For example, a person with promotional skills is not likely to be an expert in analytics. No matter the combination, these seven skills can be used to create a strong foundation for launching a more powerful and effective marketing strategy.Elizabeth Harr is partner at zurechtge Marketing.

Focus Your Resume on the Employers Needs

Focus Your Resume on the Employers NeedsDoes Your Resume Focus on the Employers Needs?Focus Your Resume on the Employers NeedsIf you graduated from college within the last month, submitted resumes, and received just a couple of nibbles in response, youre probably getting a little antsy. Maybe youre even looking for some menial job that can tide you over with a little cash while you search for something permanent. While you do that, you should be looking at your resume again and thinking of ways to improve it to persuade more employers to contact you.Look at your resume. Does it start with an Objective that focuses on what youre looking for in a job? If it does, you should shift your focus outwardly to emphasize what you have to offer the employer. That may clash with some of the advice youve been given about how to structure your resume. But if you have a specific career goal and some experience in the field you want to work in, an outward focus would help an employer see the value you have beyond what you learned in the classroom. Employers may be interested in what you want to do, but theyre more interested in what you can do for them.Look at these two examples and decide which of the two candidates you would want to interviewRecent college graduate with bachelors degree in accounting from top business school seeks challenging entry-level position with firm that offers ample growth opportunities.Recent college graduate with bachelors degree in accounting, full-time experience from two summer internships, and thorough knowledge of financial accounting, cost accounting, management accounting, tax accounting, and GAAP.If youre a hiring manager, the second example is more appealing since it offers more of an answer to the question Whats in it for me and my company?Although much of your focus in college had been on chasing high grades, hanging out with friends, and working part-time jobs to put cash in your pocketall solely for your benefitthe game has changed. Your job search has a dual focus you and the employer. If you emphasize the employers needs and how you can meet them, your job search will have a happy and quicker ending.

Signs Youre in a Toxic Work Environment and How to Handle It

Signs You’re in a Toxic Work Environment â€" and How to Handle It Signs You’re in a Toxic Work Environment - and How to Handle It Signs You're in a Toxic Work Environment - and How to Handle It Don’t let a toxic work environment catch you off guard. All jobs have some level of stress even on good days. However, if going to work (or just the thought of going to work) makes you tired, depressed, or even physically ill, that's more than just general work stress; these are the signs of a toxic work environment. Physical signs of a toxic work environment A toxic workplace can be defined as any job where the work, the atmosphere, the people, or any combination of those things cause serious disruptions in the rest of your life. These disruptions can show up in any number of physical symptoms, says a recent article by coach and human-behavior professor Melody Wilding. These include sleepless nights, feeling constantly vigilant, sweaty palms, and a racing heartbeat. What's more, a toxic or hostile workplace has negative health impacts that can affect your personal life by damaging everything from your self-esteem to your friendships, states Wilding. Our bodies are very adept at letting us know there's a danger that needs to be addressed, so we need to pay attention. Check in with yourself frequently with these questions: How are you sleeping? Are you regularly getting at least eight hours? What's your eating like? Are you often too stressed to eat, or do you tend to overeat? Are you feeling safe at home and at work? If the answers to these questions raise red flags, then it's time to assess your work environment to see what exactly is causing your health and well-being to suffer. Related:12 Tips to Manage Workplace Stress Workplace signs of a toxic environment These are some solid indicators that you're in a toxic work environment: Employee Sickness: Toxic workplaces lead to employee burnout, fatigue, and illness due to high levels of stress that wreak havoc on our bodies. If people are calling in sick or worse, are working sick, that's a good sign of a toxic work environment. Narcissistic Leadership: Your higher-ups demand that you always agree with them, tell them they're right, and feel they're above the rules. They expect everyone else to be perfect while they can meet lower standards. Little to No Enthusiasm: Look around the office. Is anyone happy to be working there? Is anyone smiling? Are conversations positive and upbeat? Is anyone talking at all? A no to these questions equals toxicity. Lack of Communication or Negative Communication: You and others don't get the necessary information to do your job. You work hard with no positive feedback and no recognition, and you might even be told to be glad you have a job at all. High Turnover: When the work environment has nothing good to offer except dysfunction, poor morale, and sickness, people will start heading for the door to find a better situation. If you notice a high turnover rate in your company or department, take that as a sign of a toxic workplace. Cliques, Gossip, and Rumors: Everyone seems to be out for themselves, and there are no genuine friendships among employees. There's lots of infighting and paranoia as well as gossip and rumors. In addition to the list above, trust your gut if it tells you something is wrong. Once you know what you're dealing with, it's time to develop strategies that can help you stay sane day to day. How to handle a toxic work environment Since it takes time to find a new job and you can't just walk away from this difficult situation immediately, it helps to develop ways to handle the dysfunction until you can step into a new job somewhere else: Find people who feel the same way you do. Develop friendships with people who feel the same way as you. The hope is that you'll watch each other's back and will share any news with the group. Do something after work that can help relieve stress. Go to the gym, do home repairs, or learn a new skill. The key is to make sure you're living a fulfilling life outside of work to combat the drama of your 9 to 5. Create lists to keep yourself busy. A list can help you stay focused on your tasks instead of the toxic atmosphere and gives you a reason to keep going every day. Document everything you do. Save emails and write down comments and decisions from meetings, phone calls, and every person who interacts with you. If you need to file a complaint, you will need the evidence to back your claim. Start your exit strategy. It is possible that things could improve at your job, in which case it might make sense to stay. However, while waiting it out, begin your search for a new job. This will help you stay positive when things get rough. If you needed to leave yesterday, consider a bridge job that will keep you active while you find something in line with your career. Knowing the signs of a toxic work environment and how to handle it will allow you to take your next step on your terms and in your time so your next job will be a place you truly enjoy working. ASME Keynote Speaker Chuck Hull Explores the Topic of 3D Print...

ASME Keynote Speaker Chuck Hull Explores the Topic of 3D Print... ASME Keynote Speaker Chuck Hull Explores the Topic of 3D Print... IMECE Keynote Speaker Chuck Hull Explores the Topic of 3D Printed Organs Nov. 20, 2017 Chuck Hull, the co-founder and chief technology officer of 3D Systems, delivered the Opening Keynote presentation, “3D Printing: Update and Future Direction,” at the IMECE 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Tampa, Fla. During his presentation at the Opening Keynote at the ASME 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Tampa earlier this month, Chuck Hull discussed what he believes is an important frontier for advanced manufacturing: regenerative medicine. The idea is to print something that will help the body heal itself, Hull told the crowd of more than 700 engineers attending the event on Nov. 6. This really combines this wonderful growing field of biotechnology with 3D printing. Hull is the co-founder of 3D Systems, and is widely considered the inventor of 3D printing. In 1983, working on an idea to speed prototyping, he developed an apparatus to make small, solid objects using ultraviolet light to cure thin, successive layers of a liquid photopolymer. Hull called the process stereolithography. In 2016, that first system, the SLA-1, was designated an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Clinical trials of a bioprinted lung are only about six years away from taking place, Chuck Hull said during his presentation. Hull described the arc of 3D printing from that first machine to the thousands of applications for 3D printing today, especially in the automotive industry, in aerospace and in healthcare. Looking ahead, Hull spoke enthusiastically about saving lives. There are about 31,000 lung transplants a year in the United States, Hull said. The waiting list is about four times that. There is a huge unmet need beyond that. There are about 900,000 deaths in the United States alone from organ impairment. If we could figure out how to manufacture these organs, it would be a huge benefit to the health of society. Hull said researchers are about six years away from clinical trials with a bioprinted lung. He described some of the steps such as using microscanning and other techniques to improve our understanding of how organs work; studying the collagen scaffolds that physically support cells in these organs; learning to 3D print scaffolds with collagen-based materials, using printers with a resolution two orders of magnitude higher than what is available today; and growing billions of organ cells. The final process is to infuse those cells into the scaffold and bring the lung back to life and make it available for transplant, he said. ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin (right) with keynote presenter Chuck Hull at the question-and-answer session following Hull’s speech. In addition to the promise of regenerative medicine, Hull pointed to advances in the use of 3D printing in the custom manufacture of hearing aids, dental products, surgical aids and implants. Hull told the dramatic story of two conjoined twins who shared blood vessels woven between their brains. In this case, 3D imaging and 3D printing were used to create models for planning separation surgery. A 27-hour operation last year at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx successfully separated the twin boys. As he showed the audience a photo of the boy’s mother, for the first time, holding just one of her sons, Hull said, “This picture, for me, makes the 34 years I’ve spent working in this field worthwhile; this is the mother the first time she held this child.” During his presentation, Hull described the special role that 3D printing has played in Detroit. Automotive was really the first industry that started adopting 3D printing, he said. Back in the late 1980s, the U.S. auto industry was having difficulty with time-to-market. From the time a design was conceived until it was produced was taking a long time, compared to some of the foreign competition. And quality was not that good. So engineers in Detroit were looking for new technology, new approaches. Solid CAD came along about that time and so did 3D printing. Those two combined for lots of rapid prototyping and rapid tooling applications in Detroit. That launched 3D printing in industry. (Left to right) ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin, Chuck Hull, ASME President Charla Wise and ASME President-Elect Said Jahanmir. Hull also described a future in which 3D printing plays a much larger role in manufacturing. He cited opportunities made possible by advances in materials, software and speed. 3D printers dont look like things that go on the factory floor. Hull said. So there is a lot of industrial integration that needs to be done in order to achieve the dream of mass production. Hull added that 3D Systems and its competitors are working to make 3D printing more manufacturing-friendly with improved plastics and metals, faster printers, systems of ganged printers, and the automation of post-processing tasks, including inspection. - Roger Torda, Public Information

Heres how to make DAILY progress toward your goals

Here’s how to make DAILY progress toward your goals Here’s how to make DAILY progress toward your goals When you’re chasing a big goal, the kind that takes months or years to accomplish, your biggest enemy will be complacency - letting days or weeks go by without any forward motion. Most dreams aren’t shattered by a conscious moment of surrender. Rather, they’re quietly consumed by years of inactivity.Until the fatal day …When you stop thinking about what you want to accomplish in the future and start saying, “When I was younger, I wanted to be a …”For this reason, when you’re chasing big meaningful goals, daily progress is crucial - not just for accelerating success - to reach the finish line at all.And the key to daily progress is routine. Here are 5 guidelines to help you form a productive routine that might become the very backbone of your success.1. Set a daily goal that is NOT overwhelmingIn one year, a person working toward their goal just 17 minutes every day will invest almost twice as much time as someone cramming in a two hour session every other week.Small wins lead to big results when you achieve them consistently. So instead of cramming when you feel like it, do a little every day - even when you don’t feel like it.2. Focus on the input, NOT the outcomeOne of the biggest reasons we avoid our work is self-doubt. We don’t know if we’re up to the challenge, and we’re not sure if we want to find out.The solution is to de-prioritize the outcome and focus on simply doing your work every day.The results will come when they come. There’s no rush and no pressure.Your job is to work for however many minutes you’ve chosen. You can do that. No question about it. No need to procrastinate. If you reach a new milestone, great. If not, still great. The point is you did your work.3. Schedule a SPECIFIC daily timeDon’t wait or hope for free time to find you. Set aside the same chosen minutes every day to work toward your big goal.Put it on your calendar. Don’t leave it to chance. And if possible, schedule your daily work session during the hours when you usually feel most alert and focused. This is a great way to get more done without spending more time.4. NEVER double upIf you miss a day, don’t try to catch up by doubling up. This mentality turns a simple 30 minutes of work into an intimidating hour, two hours, or worse…Pretty soon you’re back where you started - scared to do you work.To be clear, on days when you’re fully engaged in your work and want to keep going longer than planned, that’s fine. But don’t force yourself to play catch up when you miss a day.5. End EVERY session with planningI mentioned self-doubt is one of the biggest reasons we avoid our work. Two other huge reasons are a lack of clarity and/or excitement. Here’s a great way to squash those problems. At the end of each work session, write down: Exactly what you’ll do tomorrow One reason you’re looking forward to resuming your work Clarity and enthusiasm will often make the difference between playing hooky and taking your next step.ConclusionBrian Tracy once said, “Successful people are simply those with successful habits.”I agree. The most accomplished people in the room often aren’t the smartest, the luckiest, or the most connected. Success belongs to men and women who move forward every day until they get what they want.So use the 5 guidelines I’ve provided to establish a sustainable routine that produces daily progress. This just might be THE surest way to get ahead in life.If you enjoyed reading this post, please recommend and share it to help others find it!Want to go deeper?Do you have big goals you long to achieve? Stylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for success

Stylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for success Stylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for success The question “How should I dress at work?” comes up at every women’s conference I address.Sharon Stone is a fashion stylist and personal shopper based in Dallas, Texas. She has a flair for style that’s made her a top pick of celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen DeGeneres. I asked her advice.Carol Kinsey Goman: There are many different types of workplaces ranging from open creative offices to more traditional corporate environments. Do you have some general guidelines about appropriate dressing for a professional woman?Sharon Stone: While we all know how to dress in our time off and for special occasions, often times appropriate dressing in the workplace can often be a bit of a “grey area.” The basic guidelines to follow are simple: proper fit, classic style and neatness. In general, a proper fit goes a long way towards a professional look. This may mean updating your wardrobe if you’ve changed sizes, as we all do, or if you haven’t replaced your wardrobe in a while. Dated and faded attire bely your professionalism. Keep it simple. Trends are great and lots of fun to follow, but the workplace is an environment where the understated is more appropriate. In such an environment it is better to have your great performance command the attention, not your wardrobe. Cleanliness and neatness are always in style, and never more so than in a professional environment. Do some research on Pinterest, Instagram and online for business dressing for inspiration. Or if you have the ability to work with a personal shopper, take advantage of that objective opinion. Goman: I’ve presented my “Body Language for Women Who Lead” program at several of the most successful firms in Silicon Valley â€" and I am amazed at the array of low-cut necklines I see on women in the audience. What are your thoughts about this?Stone: The workplace should be a cleavage-free zone. While there is absolutely a time and a place to embrace a plunging neckline, the workplace is definitely neither of those. It is a distraction and unprofessional.Goman: I’m all for women dressing in a fashion that makes them feel attractive and confident, but I also advise women to take themselves (and their professional reputation) seriously. When I talk about “dress for success” for women in a leadership role, I mean dressing in ways that build, not diminish, their credibility. Women in managerial positions who dress in sexy attire (low cut tops and too-short skirts) are viewed as less intelligent. Even other women take them less seriously. Many workplaces have embraced a “c asual Friday” look all week long. Does this make it easier to dress for success?Stone: While it is important to be comfortable at work you also want to make sure that your look is a polished one. Unless you happen to work in the fitness or sporting goods industry there is absolutely no reason that “athleisure” should be present in a professional workplace. Slacks, pants, skirt or dress are the basic wardrobe from which to choose. When in doubt, a wardrobe consisting of a variety of simple black slacks paired with various blouses, sweaters, jackets, etc. and some simple well-placed jewelry, is the perfect go-to formula.Goman: Thank you, Sharon, for these great tips.Let me add that, as with every other piece of nonverbal communication, you need to consider first what “success” means in a particular context. Appropriate dress is a way of expressing respect for the situation and the people in it. Therefore, your look may change depending on the business circumstances. For examp le: Teresa is a management consultant â€" and a master at dressing for the role. She loves to wear hot pink, turquoise and fire-engine red silk dresses with stiletto heels and lots of bling to work in her New York City office. But the moment she has to meet with a conservative client, or one who is going through difficult times, Teresa transforms herself into a prim professional whose outfit matches the way she wants to be perceived. (In her words, “The success I dress for is that of my client.”) One member of her staff recalls meeting Teresa at the headquarters of a nonprofit religious organization where they were to conduct focus groups. The staff member barely recognized her stylish boss. By dressing more like the client, Teresa fit right in. She looked like one of the nuns.I know it’s superficial, but in a job interview, and indeed any business meeting, you are being evaluated, at least to some degree, by your appearance, clothing and grooming. If you want to be judged as a consummate professional, you need to dress the part.Clothing has an effect on both the wearer and the observer. It has been proven that people are more likely to give money (charitable donations, tips) or information to someone if that person is well dressed. And if you ever watch actors go through their first dress rehearsal of a play, you’ll see firsthand the amazing transformation that happens when the actors are in costume.Experiment with your appearance. Notice how you feel and how people react to you when you wear certain colors or styles. Then, based on those reactions and your career goals, you can make an informed decision about what dress for success means for you.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. How to Open an Art Gallery

How to Open an Art Gallery How to Open an Art Gallery Art galleries are similar to small businesses to a certain extent. In most cases, the gallerys purpose is to sell art and to keep the gallery in business. However, it is one business where the customer doesnt mind price increases. In fact, its good news for an art collector when the prices of an artists work increase, as this signifies the artwork is becoming more valuable in the art market. To open an art gallery, you will need certain things at the beginning: Potential art collectors if it is a commercial galleryA stable of artistsPassion for both art and businessA consistent vision of your brandLike any small business start-up, youll need a business planA gallery site in a prime locationEnough capital to cover a few months operating costsTenacity and patience Art Collectors As with starting up any small business, you must know your market first. Many art gallery owners began first with a list of potential clients. Knowing a handful of people you can sell artwork to will help you get your business off the ground. As you develop good relationships with your collectors, they will then introduce you to their friends and associates and this will help to establish your art gallery. As word-of-mouth grows, so will your business. If your gallery is not a commercial one, but rather an experimental showcase, you will need to have alternative sources of funding, such as art grants. Other skills include learning about artwork dimension.   Artists The art world wouldnt exist if it were not for artists. To open up a successful art gallery, you will need to begin with a strong roster of artists. Since art is highly subjective, a large part of your selection is based on personal taste and intuition. Some galleries chose their artists by location, theme, style or trend, to name a few. For example, some galleries will only show landscape paintings or exhibit artists who live in the same city. The possibilities are endless. However, the key to success is knowing that you have specific collectors (individual or corporate) you can sell the artwork to. Art and Business Know-How Besides being knowledgeable about running a small business, it is imperative to also be passionate about art. A lukewarm salesperson is hardly successful in sales. If you are just starting out, visit as many art galleries as you can and talk to the gallery directors and sales staff. Better yet, get a job in an art gallery first, to gain first-hand experience of how a gallery operates. As you acquire the necessary knowledge for running a successful gallery, you will then have the confidence to establish your own art gallery. Location As with any business, location is key. If your gallery is in a heavily trafficked popular tourist area, you will have great opportunities to sell the work of the local artists. If your gallery is located in an art center, then you have more chances to gain the attention of the art world cognoscenti. Some gallery owners may even forego an actual site and maintain a virtual gallery on the internet. Capital Every business needs start-up money. Initial costs include the rental of the space, the necessary equipment for running a business and exhibiting art, and hiring staff. Other factors to consider include the monthly operating costs. Networking The word used in the art world is schmooze, which means to network. Artists, critics, and art dealers all need to make connections and broaden their art networks. Attending gallery and museum openings is imperative. Visiting art fairs and biennials during the opening press previews is the ultimate time for networking. Have your business cards, artist catalogs and postcards ready to hand out as you walk around schmoozing. Whenever one of your artists is in an exhibition, be sure to stand near the artwork to provide more information and to arrange studio visits with those potential contacts. Maintaining good relationships with art critics who can write about your artists is also a good way to generate interest in your gallery. So be sure you can provide ample text and images to the critic or journalist. Tenacity and Patience Running a gallery in most cases takes a period of time to establish, so being patient is key to building a steady business.

How walking faster could help you live longer

How walking faster could help you live longer How walking faster could help you live longer If you’re the type to saunter or stroll down a sidewalk, you may want to speed up.A new study from the  British Journal of Sports Medicine found that people walking at an average or brisk pace had a higher chance of living longer than people who walked at a slow stroll. Why it helps to speed upOut of the 50,225 participants in England and Scotland who were followed over a period of 14 years, the brisk walkers were 21% less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases than slow strollers. The researchers suggest that the brisk walking helps because it provides “a greater stimulus for physiologic adaptations in functions known to influence cardiovascular disease mortality.”The effects of the walking pace were greater in the older participants. Walkers ages 60 years or over lowered their risk of dying by heart disease by 46%.What’s a brisk pace? A sweaty one. “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an altern ative indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty when sustained,” Emmanuel Stamatakis, one of the authors of the study, explained. The good news is that you do not have to break a sweat to get walking benefits. An average pace is enough to make a long-term difference. The walkers with an average pace lowered their heart disease mortality risk by  24%.This finding backs up others on the power of less intense exercise. One study found that just an hour of low-level, aerobic exercise was enough to lower depression. To keep your heart healthy and your mind at peace, in other words, you just need to keep moving at a steady pace.

Job Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and Beyond

Job Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and Beyond Job Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and Beyond Job search expenses were potentially a tax deduction when you filed your income taxes through the 2017 tax year. However, since whats deductible on your income taxes- and whats not- is determined by the current tax law, be aware that this deduction has changed. What Does the New Tax Bill Mean for Job Searchers?   In December 2017, the U.S. House and Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Job Acts, with provisions that took effect in 2018 and will last through 2025. This bill suspends or eliminates many deductions, including the option to deduct job-search-related expenses, according to  Forbes. Forbes reports that Miscellaneous deductions which exceed 2% of your AGI will be eliminated for the tax years 2018 through 2025. This includes job search expenses. 2018â€"2025 Job Search Expenses Tax Deduction Elimination For 2018 and going forward, these deductions will not be available or will change. For example, the deduction for moving expenses if you are relocating because of a job transfer, for a new job, or to start a business has been suspended through 2025. 2017 Deductions If You Searched for a Job in the Same Line of Work *Note: The information below is accurate for taxes paid for 2017 (that is, the taxes filed by April 15, 2018). If you were looking for a job in the same line of work youre currently in, many of your expenses like phone calls, the costs of preparing and copying your  resume, and career counseling were deductible for 2017. You didnt have to be out of work to have some of your costs qualify as a deductible expense, but only expenses that exceeded 2% percent of your income counted. If you had been unemployed during 2017, you needed to report your  unemployment  compensation as income. Also,  severance pay, bonuses, 401(k) and/or other pension distributions may be taxable. Work that was done as an independent contractor also must be included in your income. For detailed information on what you need to report and how to report it, the  IRS  website is an excellent resource. What You Cant Deduct You can deduct certain expenses you have in looking for a new job in your present occupation, even if you do not get a new job. You cannot deduct these expenses if: You are looking for a job in a new occupation. There was a substantial break between the ending of your last job and when you began looking for a new one.You are looking for a job for the first time. Deductible Job Search Expenses The following are allowable job search deductible expenses, summarized from  IRS Publication 529. (Again, note that these were deductible expenses for the year 2017, but will not be available for taxes paid in the year 2018 and going forward.) Employment and Outplacement Agency Fees You can deduct employment and outplacement agency fees you pay in looking for a new job in your present occupation. However, if in a later year, your employer pays you back for employment agency fees, you must include the amount you receive in your gross income up to the amount of your tax benefit in the earlier year. Also, if your employer pays the fees directly to the employment agency and you are not responsible for them, you do not include them in your gross income. Fees for online services directly connected to your job search like premium networking through LinkedIn might also be covered. Resume Expenses You can deduct amounts you spend for typing, printing, and mailing copies of a resume to prospective employers if you are looking for a new job in your present occupation. Travel and Transportation Expenses If you travel to an area and, while there, you look for a new job in your present occupation, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area. You can deduct the travel expenses if the trip is primarily to look for a new job. Hotel accommodations and meals associated with travel to another area for a job in your field may also be deductible. Even if you cannot deduct the travel expenses to and from an area, you can deduct the expenses of looking for a new job in your present occupation while in the area. Phone Calls Local and long distance phone calls to prospective employers are also deductible. Documentation As with all tax deductions, there are three important words to remember: document, document, document. Keep track of your expenses, and back them up with receipts.   The information contained in this article is not tax or legal advice and is not a substitute for such advice. State and federal laws change frequently, and the information in this article may not reflect your own state’s laws or the most recent changes to the law.
